About Windhoek |
As the capital (and only) city in Namibia, Windhoek plays a key role on tourism within the country. Almost all visitors enter the country through Windhoek, and the country’s main international airport is situated within the city. The city is modern, with traces of German style in its architecture and the many German speaking residents to be found. English and Afrikaans are widely spoken too, in addition to various local dialects spoken across the city and surrounds.
Eros Mountains, Daan Viljoen Game Park, German style buildings, traditional German food, Katatura, Khomasda, Okahandja Craft Market and many other things can be enjoyed, while activities include a range of options such as hiking, bird watching, hunting, safaris, horse back trails, walking tours, souvenir tours, day tours, city tours and trips to game farms in the area.
With a population of 230,000 people of mixed tribal groups, the culture is diverse. Herero, Owambo, Damara, Kavango, Buster, Nama, San, Afrikaans and German all live in harmony within the city – offering an eclectic mixture of cultures and influences. |
