Visas and Passports

All visitors require a passport to enter Namibia, which must be valid for at least 6 months beyond the intended stay in the country, and have sufficient pages for entry and exit stamps. All visitors must also have a valid return ticket. Visitors from the following countries do not require visas for stays of up to 90 days: Angola, Austria, Australia, Belgium, Botswana, Brazil, Cuba, Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Ireland, Japan, Kenya, Liechtenstein, Luxembourg, Russia, Spain, Switzerland, UK, USA, Mozambique, New Zealand, Portugal, Iceland, the Netherlands, Malaysia, Singapore, the Scandinavian countries, South Africa, Zambia and Zimbabwe.

For visitors from other countries, please check with your nearest Namibian Consulate about obtaining a visa.

Health and Immunization

Areas of Namibia with Malaria: Present in the provinces of Kunene, Ohangwena, Okavango, Omaheke, Omusati, Oshana, Oshikoto, Otjozondjupa, and the Caprivi Strip. If you will be visiting an area of Namibia with malaria, you will need to discuss with your doctor the best ways for you to avoid getting sick with malaria. Ways to prevent malaria include the following:

  • Taking a prescription antimalarial drug
  • Using insect repellent and wearing long pants and sleeves to prevent mosquito bites
  • Sleeping in air-conditioned or well-screened rooms or using bednets

Airport Tax

A tax of US$30 is payable, at the airport, by passengers departing on international and regional flights or US$10 on domestic flights.

Currency

The official currency of Namibia is the The dollar, which is divided into 100 cents. When traveling to Mozambique, take South Africa Rand (ZAR) or US Dollars (USD).The ration of the Namibian dollar is a 1:1 ratio to the South African Rand (ZAR). Both the Namibian Dollar and South African Rand is legal tender in Namibia though change will usually be given in Namibian Dollars.

Car Hire

Namibians drive on the left, and all signposts are written in English. The general speed limit is a comfortable 120km/h on the tar roads outside of towns and 100km/h on gravel roads. It is easy to travel around Namibia by car, and a 2WD vehicle is perfectly adequate for most journeys. However long distances will take a little more planning. There are plenty car hire options for self drive travel in Namibia.

Shopping in Mozambique and Guide to Souvenirs

The stand keepers in Namibia are, as usual, very active in attempting a sale. But, they were friendly and non-threatening.There are plenty markets in the city and various roadside stops too. Although many resorts and hotels accept Rands, exchange your money if you want to purchase anything from the markets, shops and petrol stations. Money can be exchanged at banks (closed between 12:00pm – 14:00pm), local shops and even some markets.Souvenirs are a combination of native craft-type items like carvings and polished stones.

What to take

You need a strong rucksack that can hold lots of water. Duffel bag is recommended. Wet wipes. Not much water here to wash your hands.WATER You need to have at least 2 litres on you at all times and at least 10 litres in a car.  First-aid kit containing, amongst others, insect repellent, possibly a malaria prophylaxis, bandages, diarrhoea medication and painkillers. Moisturising lotion and lip balm.

What to Wear

Good walking boots. You need socks and bandages for the before and after arrival of blisters. Warm cloths for the nights, especially if visit during the winter seasons. When visiting game reserves neutral colours are preferred, but not white, because bright hues may unsettle the animals. Shorts and safari shirts in brown, beige, dark green or khaki are best. Wear sensible walking shoes and take a hat for protection from the sun. In the evening it is a good idea to wear long sleeved shirts and slacks so as little skin as possible is exposed to mosquitoes.

Best Months to visit:

The peak seasons for most visitors is mid-July to late October. The months between July and late October are ideal for game spotting in the national parks.

The time of the year to be avoided, if possible, is the Namib Desert during the summers and the entire country during the Namibian school holidays. School holidays are from April 25– May 25, August 15–September 5 and December 5–January 15.
