Experience the unforgiving yet hauntingly beautiful Skeleton Coast – so called because of the bleached whale and seal bones that once covered the shore during the whaling times, and also for the skeletal shipwrecks that have made this area so popular, the beaches of the Skeleton Coast National Park can also be explored.
Wildlife within the river and inland areas include baboons, giraffes, lions, black rhino and springbok, while marine life abounds along the coast. The large seal colony at Cape Cross is home to thousands of cape fur seals who come to the area to breed each year, while whales, dolphin and large numbers of seabird are also common.
Attractions in the area include Cape Cross, where the first European explorer Diego Ciao first landed in 1486, and erected a two-metre-high cross; plus the coastal town of Lüderitz, the Namib Desert and the towns of Swakopmund and Walvis Bay. Travellers can enjoy a range of activities, including fishing, fishing tours and trips to Angola and around the coast, walking, bird watching, excursions to the Namib desert to see the desert elephants, underwater spear gun hunting, scuba diving, snorkelling, boat trips, camping tours and 4x4 safaris to name a few.
