Duwisib was once a formidable and imposing castle built in 1909 by Baron Captain Heinrich Von Wolf. The castle stands on the high ground looking southwards onto a valley, and is situated in semi-arid lands, 70kms south-west of Maltahohe. Once a well-built structural wonder, the castle fell to disrepair and until the 1970’s, stood derelict. Opened to the public in 1990, the castle is now a popular rest stop for travellers making their way to the dunes and other wonders at Sossusvlei. One interesting bit of legend is that the Baron's horses escaped into the Namib Desert and where responsible for the Namib Desert Feral horses which are found in the region. Whether this is true or not, this is an attraction not to be missed, and camping in this setting is a must-try.
The campsite has no power source; however guests can enjoy good camping spots with an ablutions block, a few great picnic spots and a shop within the castle. Supplies can be sourced at the nearby town, and with no restaurant or bar on the premises guests will need to bring their own food and drinks.
