Most of Namibias population is of the Ovambo ethnicity. Other ethnic groups are the Herero and Himba people. There are also large groups of Khoisan living in Namibia.

Humidity is low, rainfall is highly variable, and droughts are common. Temperatures generally range from up to 30C.

What is the local currency?


The official currency of Namibia is the The dollar, which is divided into 100 cents. When traveling to Mozambique, take South Africa Rand (ZAR) or US Dollars (USD).The ration of the Namibian dollar is a 1:1 ratio to the South African Rand (ZAR). Both the Namibian Dollar and South African Rand is legal tender in Namibia though change will usually be given in Namibian Dollars.

Although many resorts and hotels accept Rands, exchange your money if you want to purchase anything from the markets, shops and petrol stations. Money can be exchanged at banks (closed between 12:00pm – 14:00pm), local shops and even some markets.

Can I use my credit card?


Credit Cards are accepted almost anywhere in Namibia, except for some of the inexpensive resorts. Major credit cards are accepted and most ATMs are linked to international networks.

How much should I Tip?


It is customary to give 10% of the bill in restaurants. Porters should receive about 2-5 N$ and a petrol station attendant about 2N$

Can I use my Cell/Mobile Phone in Namibia?


Yes, you can use your SIM card in most phones providing it is suitable for use on a GSM 1800 network and is not SIM locked.Mobile phones are common in Namibia and use the same frequency Europe and the rest of Africa. The Namibian cell phone network is MTC. Sim cards can be bought at MTC stores and other cell phones shops.

Is there internet connectivity?


There are internet cafes in Windhoek, Swakopmund and Opuwo.

What plugs and power voltage is used in Namibia?


The voltage in Namibia is 220-230 V (identical to South Africa). Most supermarkets sell adaptors. At night Namibians use candle light or light from a 12 Volt battery.
