Border Post Formalities
If you enter by car from South Africa, you usually cross the border at Vioolsdrif / Noordoewer at the Orange River. Entry is normally easy. The officials are friendly and professional.
Crossing the Border in a Rented Car If you travel from South Africa to Namibia in a rented car, you need a written permit by the car rental company.
Vehicle Import Long-term travelers can bring their own vehicle. Transport from Europe in a container to Walvis Bay or Cape Town costs around 2500 US$. The shipment takes 3 to 4 weeks. You cannot sell the vehicle at the end of your journey, but have to take it back to your home country.
Traffic police Traffic police, who wear navy and white, will only stop you for traffic violations. The civil police, who wear grey and white, usually ask to inspect your documents. If you are stopped by the police remember that politeness and a little patience go a long way. Always ask for a receipt if you have to pay a fine, for any traffic offense. Be particularly careful for pedestrians, especially when approaching stopped buses or heavy vehicles. Avoid driving at night, when animals, unmarked road repairs and vehicles without lights, are added dangers.
